Trial Notes: MailChimp

Connect via Twitter / Facebook for
social sharing. One click "tweet your campaign" option, and display your Twitter statistics (Twitter template) live within your campaign. Can watch how many tweet/retweet and "like" your campaign

Import contact lists from: Salesforce.com, Google Contacts, FreshBooks, Zoho, Eventbrite, HighRise and more.
Salesforce.com & Mail Chimp: Manage lists / data from the web or Salesforce (syncs automatically). Import Mail Chimp contacts to SFDC. Import existing SFDC campaigns to MailChimp lists. Track Activity History and statistics by Mail Chimp Campaign ("We'll search for Contacts by email, attach a Note with campaign stats, and add them to theCampaign if you have the Professional Edition of Salesforce or higher)". We did notice that MailChimp does not retain sign-on information within SFDC and prompts the user to sign-in each time they want to use the feature.

SocialPro: Pulls publicly available social data on your contacts, including Twitter ID, Job title, Gender / Age if known. Email campaigns can be created by any of the SocialPro factors (i.e email all Vancouver Timeraiser artists who have a Twitter account).

Email statistics: Clean interface that allows you to see analytics by email campaign (i.e September 2010 Stakeholders), which include number sent, open, clicks in plain text, clicks in HTML, Google Analytics, time etc. Emails can also be sent based on A.I.M reports, so you can only send emails to those who opened your emails in the past. It is helpful to be able to see how many people clicked on individual links included in the email campaign.

Automated billing by use: "If you send campaigns frequently and on a regular schedule (at least once a month), go with one of our monthly plans. We bill your credit card every month, based on the total number of subscribers managed in your account. Your monthly fee is automatically adjusted as your list grows or shrinks."

Time Warp: Can deliver the same inbox by a specified time, including by time zone (paid account only)

Features needed:
The ability to send a customized Mail Chimp email through Salesforce.com. Currently the SFDC connector enables the sharing and maintenance of contacts from Mail Chimp campaigns / SFDC, but to send an email we must use Mail Chimp's web interface. Activity History only tracks emails automatically imported from contacts in SDFC. Cannot share lists between SFDC users.

Design / Editing Console: Several times during campaign building (using Chrome), Mail Chimp crashed or formatted design code in funky ways. A review of the code generated by Mail Chimp in the editor revealed tables and lots of messy code that makes hand-editing code near impossible. It is difficult to edit templates.

Trial Notes: Vertical Response
Since we were once subscribers and active users of Vertical Response, we have included our notes on this tool. Ultimately the decision to switch to Mail Chimp was to enable increased analytics and integration with our existing tools (Google Apps / SFDC).

Salesforce.com integration: Cannot share campaign / mailing lists with other SFDC users, which is problematic for our team's workflow.

Design / Styling Options:
Email Wizard, Email Canvas, Freeform HTML or Text

Integration with Salesforce.com:
The ability to draft and send emails with Salesforce.com

Features Needed
- Challenging that the email template builder sits within the Salesforce.com iFrame and doesn't fit (requires horizontal scrolling).
- Timed out while building a web template / no autosave
- Several templates cannot be edited (colour / style must be used as is). Only option is to edit full HTML
- Cannot share campaign lists outside of individual Vertical Response accounts
- Advanced reporting / metrics. Reporting over time within Salesforce.com, as well as social media metrics (Twitter users included in subscriber list).
